SynnoveI come from Bergen in western Norway but now live in Fredrikstad along the border of Sweden. I am always experimenting with different kinds of expressions. Writing and photography are my preferred mediums. In my artwork, I am always trying to capture the moment. I can't remember when I started taking pictures. I have a very naive way of photographing; I often end up with pictures of a sole object. Less is more, I guess. In my photography, I search for different kinds of texture and color. This is what attracts my attention when looking for a subject. My best photographs reflect this. I work as an IT technician but am fortunate to work on my own projects on a daily basis. Synnove's photographs may be viewed here as well as on her Facebook profile.

A collection of Synnove's photographs are featured in Status Hat's February, 2010 publication: AIR, and in a special feature "Perspectives of Landscape" in the October 2010 Status Hat issue (LANDSCAPE).

Steph Davies

I used to get mad at the wind when I was four years old, living in Missouri, for blowing the pages of my coloring book when I was trying to color. Now, as an artist living in Milwaukee and a little more of a grown up, I embrace it and what it offers. I am drawn to the images of birds for many reasons, the simplest being that freedom of flight. I like the idea of capturing something in detail that you often just catch a glimpse of. I studied illustration, printmaking and book making at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I learned that art didn't have to be a painting. I was lucky enough to spend one day a week huddled over a sketchbook in the basement of the field museum. That's where I first met, and fell for flight . You can find our more about Steph and her art here: www.stephdaviesartmusic.com

A collection of Steph Davies's artwork will appear in Status Hat's March, 2010 publication: DOORWAYS.

Sherri LemireArtist and Illustrator Sherri Lemire took her core classes at the former Otis/Parsonsin Los Angeles. She finished her degree at Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL in 2000. Sherri has studied with working illustrators Regan Dunnick, & Joe Thiel. Her study with consummate painter, Fiore Custode, would forever change her painting style. Sherri is enthusiastic about travel and she has a history in dance.  Her artwork has a painterly style reminiscent of Impressionistic oil sketches. Having studied color extensively, Sherri is impassioned by fervent palettes. Her compositions are intimate and eclectic, inspired by snapshots and candid photography. Although she has made a career in landscape and mural arts, her preferred medium is oil on canvas. Currently, Sherri is developing ideas for a Salon & Burlesque Series. These will be uniquely different from previous works, as she is exploring the use of charcoal on canvas, with smaller, more subtle annotations of color. Her elegant drawing style will be more evident in this series  Sherri is a Flordia Native, who readily admits she would never be successful without her loving husband.   They share one son and currently reside in Tampa, Florida. More of Sherri's work can be found at her website:  www.sherrilemire.com

Russie Wight-WaltmanI have lived half my life on Cape Cod in the woods not far from the sea. The other half in a southern city near a river. Both places have influenced the content as well as the materials in my assemblages. My method of creating is to never work from an idea. The inspiration comes from an impression of something, like a the texture of a tree trunk or a crumbling wall in the city or an old photograph. Making art for me is about not thinking so much and enjoying whatever happens.

Some of Russie Wight-Waltman's assemblages can be seen in the March issue of Status Hat's artszine:  "Doorways"

Nicholoas Petrucco

With the whole process of infrared photography, I attempt to perform it with precision and a meditative quality. Loading the film for me is like delving into the primal nothing to be birthed with new eyes for the world, experiencing a different life, then returning to the darkness to be reborn back into this world, while keeping the eyes. All in all, I find the process very Zen and wish to share what I experience with others. Find out more about Nicholas on his website.

Jim FuessJim Fuess works with liquid acrylic paint on canvas. Most of his paintings are abstract, but there are recognizable forms and faces in a number of the abstract paintings. He strives for grace and fluidity, movement and balance. He likes color and believes that beauty can be an artistic goal. There is whimsy, fear, energy, movement, fun and dread in his abstract paintings, a lot of which are anthropomorphic. The shapes seem familiar. The faces are real. The gestures and movements are recognizable. More of his abstract paintings, both in color and black and white, may be seen at www.jimfuessart.com.

Jessica Sabogal, ArtistIt all started when her big brother gave Jessi her first graffiti magazine. It was love at first sight. She sat down, tacky markers and computer paper in hand, and drew non-stop until mastering every single letter and color. In high school, she graduated to paint and canvas. In college, she picked up the can and a particular interest in the subject-artist relationship/perspective. And now, here she is, still at it.

Jessica Sabogal is a first generation Colombian American graffiti artist, hip-hop dancer, photographer and President-in-Training. Inspired by the rhythm of a drumbeat, the body in motion, and the stories less told, Jessi seeks to undo the taboo reputation of the spray can while making art that incites action, inspiration and appreciation.   Born and raised in San Francisco, Jessi currently resides with her partner in Northampton, MA, musing, creating and applying to grad schools. Jane Chakravarthy, Artist and Poet“There is no art without living, being without the microscope of the mind, the understanding from the heart, and the embrace of the fire from the soul, for me, there is no life, only an existence."

Jane Chakravarthy is a visual artist and poet.  She primarily uses abstract imagery, metaphor, symbolism and irony to express her message:  "I rarely have a preconceived notion of what I will write or paint. My creativity comes from my exposure to life or vicariously, from other people. I focus my energy to create images or scenes which then allow me to purge and effect a tangible expression; something I feel connected to. I strive for my work to have a personal message, even if my point is not so easily classified or defined. I feel satisfied if my work connects with others, offers them guidance, hope, peace or just a sense of acknowledgment at some level. My expression; creating my art, is a spiritual catharsis for me. I strive to let free my woes, to celebrate my oneness, and embrace our collective consciousness." You find more of her work at her website:  www.janechakravarthy.com

Holly Friesen, ArtistHolly Friesen was born in Saskatchewan, studied Visual Arts at John Abbott College in Montreal, painting at York University in Toronto, and with various other artists across Canada & in Europe over the years. More importantly she has painted from close observation of nature for over 20 years. Throughout her many years of travel she discovered the portability of watercolours and developed her observational skills by painting on location. For the last five years she has rediscovered oils and their luscious physicality & acrylics with their versatility. The scale of her paintings has grown to accommodate the large movement she feels within herself and the earth around her. Her newest pieces are largely informed by the internal metaphors and dream images she encounters when working from the “inside” of the earth landscape.

Holly Friesen directs & coordinates a large barn studio in Mont-Tremblant with a group of artists. The barn serves as both a summer studio and a gallery allowing direct contact between the artists and the public, which is an important element for Holly. In the winter she returns to her Montreal studio located in the Complexe du Canal Lachine in Montreal.  Find more of her work at: www.theroaringinside.blogspot.com and www.hollyfriesen.com.

Fables by JAMBBAL

I am not Dahl Quarray; I am me, the author of “Beyond the Sky-and-Water Line" and "Short Stories and Tall Tales." Dahl Quarray is a pseudonym.  I chose a pseudonym in attempts to preserve the privacy and serenity of my life as it is in these later years. That may sound egotistical to anticipate the need to defend against celebrity as a result of writing poems, but while I have no interest in celebrity, one cannot anticipate the surprises around every corner of life, pleasant or otherwise. In my suburban spot in northeastern United States, I enjoy seclusion with the choice of bustle mere moments away; uninterrupted hours of contemplation or relaxation by virtue of a phone message system and a locked door, either of which can be answered; the profound joy afforded by a backyard full of old trees and shrubs, herb and vegetable gardens and critters of all kinds.

As for using a pseudonym, I believe “What’s in a Name” is much less important than what’s in the heart. Thus, I chose Dahl Quarray, which in Italian, dal cuore means: “from the heart”.

Cualquiera is a 21 year old artist, hairdresser, and student living smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles.  Rather than keep the artistic and academic fields of her life separate, she seeks to use art as a way of understanding, expanding upon, and conveying the ideas she engages in her study of international development and public health at UCLA.  A self-trained artist, Cualquiera's works are made almost exclusively from reused or recycled materials-- a majority of resources used are found, literally, on the streets of LA.   Each piece functions on both macro and micro scales in order to convey the balance between individuated parts that make up larger systems. But ultimately, its that darn selfish personal joy of creation that motivates her efforts.  Cualquiera has plans to graduate from college this spring, do field work/research in Kenya and Bolivia this summer, and then move to Buenos Aires, Argentina this fall to paint murals and see whats going on in the world.   You can find her at this link:  http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2559047&id=2538286&l=aa73fc0266

Other work (Hell’s Waiting Room, Lots, The Treadmill Trilogy (WORK, Gestation, and Organization Man), The Overheard Music, Profit, and audio dramas Rain and Marlboro Angel are predictably urban. The Treadmill Trilogy was recently read at the Dramatists Guild, NYC, in April, 2010.  You can ontact her through http://www.facebook.com/catherine.castellani

Catherine has written an article for Status Hat that appears in the "Dialogue" issue, April, 2010.

She once went to art school but was not a very good art student.

She mostly takes pictures of abandoned buildings and herself -- she's not conceited, just lonely.

Abby - Stompface - & Mr. Bird...

Mr. Bird loves hanging out with the floating teacups, building time machines, yoyo's with faces on them and not getting eaten by cats. He also enjoys putting strange things upon his head, interpretive dancing and invisible unicorns--except when they eat all his donuts. More illustrations of Mr. Bird's adventures may be found at: http://mrbirdsadventures.blogspot.com.

You can meet Mr. Bird in Status Hat's February, 2010 publication: AIR.

Abby (Stompface) also loves invisible unicorns, but it quite fond of visible ones too. When not giving Mr. Bird life, time is spent on 'Stompface', sketching many whimsical pictures and ranting about anything and everything. Additional information and works by Abby are available for viewing at her blog:  http://stompface.blogspot.com/.
