Lagniappe

poetry by JANE BLANCHARD

Shortly after we were married,
my husband introduced me to
a place that has become
my favorite Cajun restaurant
on St. Simon’s Island.
The wait staff there
are quick to bring
each hungry table
a saucer full of creamy cheese,
softened and seasoned,
on a plate of crispy crackers.
It’s fun to smear the spread,
then bite and chew
the textured flavors
before the arrival
of the entrée.
The little something extra
so satisfies my appetite
that I keep going back
for more.
